Glacier Bay : A glacier created in the high peaks of the St. Elias Mountains (Alaska). Over time, falling snow piles up in mountain recesses, and ever so slowly the weight of accumulating snow compact lower layers into dense ice. Not in a City : A humpback whale can easily be identified by its stocky body with an obvious hump and black dorsal coloring. The head and lower jaw are covered with knobs called tubercles, which are hair follicles, and are characteristic of the species.Humpbacks frequently breach, throwing two-thirds or more of their bodies out of the water and splashing down on their backs. Not in a City : Matanuska Glacier is for us a favorite picnic spot after an intensve glacier hike. The Matanuska Glacier (Alaska) heads in the Chugach Mountains and trends northwest 27 miles.
